Inhume

Wywiad przeprowadził - Tomasz Osuch
Next up: I talked to Inhume's guitarist, Harold, (who you might also know from Mangled) about Inhume's past, present & future. He's been playing brutal music in both these bands for a long time, but the intie below is mostly about Inhume. But of course I didn't forget to ask Harold what's new in Mangled, while I was at it. Read on to get the answers to Inhume's recent killer album called "In For The Kill"... So, enjoy! Have you ever asked yourself why you play grind and death metal and not any other genre of metal? You started your career playing death metal in Mangled, and later you joined Inhume. Do you fully carry out your plans and music visions in both bands?

"I started to listen to metal when I was 13, and still love all kinds of metal! My passions are death metal and grindcore, and I like to play brutal music! I am playing guitar in Mangled for like 12 years now and still do. I joined Inhume in the end of 1997 to replace Richard. I want to stay in both bands and sometimes it's not easy to work at the same time for Mangled and Inhume, but I like to be busy...hehehe"

Do you think that grind is an evolutionary genre nowadays, do you think that it is possible to do something more in this music? Of course without any influences from other genres of brutal music.

"Grind is more popular then a few years ago, but still underground! In grindcore you can do what you want, but it has to sound like a machine! We use different influences because everyone in Inhume has some favorite style. Grind, death metal, hardcore, crust... whatever..."

There are 3 years between "Decomposing From Inside" and "In For The Kill". Why did we have to wait for Inhume new album so long?

"It has several reasons. We all are busy in other bands and we all have fulltime jobs, and not always time to work on new material. Also because of playing gigs/tours and visiting other concerts to support the scene! I think it's worthy to let them wait for so long, because we want to do it better and better every time, so prepare for our next assault!"

Inhume are six members. Some say that the more members the more problems he, he... Are there any problems between you inside the band?

"There are absolutely no problems in the band, but it's true what you mention here about the more people, the more problems. For example: We can go on tour, so 6 people have to get those days off from work. We all want to go tour and play as much as we can. I never had any problems to get my days off, but some do and that is what you call a problem!"

Inhume's new album is very fast and brutal. Is it possible to play faster and more brutal than that? Aren't you afraid that someday it could be impossible to play so fast and brutal?

"What are you trying to say here? We are getting old? hehehe... I won't say we are the fastest band in world, but I think there will be a technic to play faster then we do! Inhume is grind, and it doesn't need to be fast all the time, so the most important thing is that the songs are cool and that we are satisfied! We like it the grind way, you get the GRIND!"

Lots of Dutch and also other bands are recording at Excess, but you recorded the new stuff at Frankie's Kitchen again. Is it the best and the only place for recording Inhume's music?

"No, actually it's not the best place to record our material, and it was our first album recording at Frankie's. Our first album is recorded by Erwin (guitarist Mangled), but the promo we've recorded in 2001 was at Frankie's. We recorded like 3-4 songs include a cover from Regurgitate to appair on a tribute to Regurgitate and spread some promo's to labels. Erwin has just finished his new studio 'ToneShed' studio, and our next album will be recorded here!"

Thanks to the Promo 2001 you signed a deal with Osmose. Did you record songs from this promo again for "In For The Kill" or is it completely new stuff?

"There are 2 songs from this promo that we also recorded for our "In for the Kill" album. Our deal at Osmose is very nice, but it went different. We saw at the website from Osmose that they were looking for bands like: Nasum and Inhume. At that time we didn't had any deal, so we got in contact with Osmose and after a while we signed a deal for 2 albums!"

Do you think about Inhume as an underground band? Did you hear opinion that when Inhume signed with Osmose, it split with underground?

"Inhume is and always will be underground! I don't have much to say about that, because it's simply the way we work and we like it this way! I can imagine that bands sign with a big label, they grow big! That's a big problem when you play Grind!"

It will be Inhume's 10th anniversary in 2004! Are you planning anything special for this occasion? Maybe a grind surprise from grind Inhume to the truly devoted grind fans?

"Probably we will have a surprise for the fans this year, but it won't be a surprise when I should tell you this.... isn't it? We are collecting live material right now, and probably we will do something with a live recording! Just keep your eyes open for our 10th anneversary..."

In the past you participated on numerous split cds, which were/are very popular on grind scene. There were Inhume split releases with Suppository, Blood, Mundo De Mierda. Are you going to make any split cds in the future or maybe some ep's and stuff like that?

"There is nothing planned yet, but we would like to release a split with Exhumed or Cephalic Carnage, but we don't have any material for it! We prefer to work on new material for our next release, so maybe next year."

We can listen to different kinds of grind music nowadays. Do you enjoy these new kinds and everything that is connected with it? I mean stuff like surgical grind, porno grind, or shitting on someone else's face? Do you accept stuff like that?

"I exept all this, but I am not into all these sorts of grind! I prefer Death/Grind, and not all the bullshit around!"

Do you think that grind & gore music is for women also? I mean here the most vomiting and perverse forms of this kinds of metal. What do you think when you see girls/women in Haemorrhage or Mortician t-shirts?

"Yeah of course! I like to see it that way, and I don't think that music can be made for only women or man! The more support you get for your band, the better!"

I heard that you are working on the successor of great "In For The Kill" album and planning to record next stuff in this year. Can you say anything more about it? Any details concerning the third album?

"We are working on new material now, and we've finished like 4 new songs. I can't say if the next album will be again that extreme as our In for the Kill album, but we want to have progression in every album and as far I can see now is that the new songs are fast again!"

I also have some questions about Mangled to you. Fadeless Records released your new stuff recently and this is 7"EP "Carnal Abhorrence". How can you describe this record? A few words about it please...

"To release "Carnal Abhorrence" was an idea from Fadeless Records. Fadeless Records was interested to release a split 7" with Mangled. Actually we didn't find any band (we like) to appear on this split because all the bands we asked didn't have material to release on a split and came up with a 4 track EP that include: 2 new songs and 2 cover songs! "Visions from the Dark Side" from Morbid Angel and "A Skull Full Of Maggots" from Cannibal Corpse on clear vinyl! Check it out at: www.mangled.nl and you can listen to some mp3 files!"

I read that you are working on the new Mangled album. Can you tell us anything more about the new album? When should we expect it?

"We still have no label that will release our new album, but we'll record our new album in May. After the recordings we will send some new material to a few labels that showed interests after hearing our 2 song promo. I hope when we will find a label, that our new album will be out in the end of 2004!"

And for the end this will be a short question - the best grind and the best death metal band for you is...

"I have several favourite bands and it's not easy to say this is the best band but...... Best Grindcore band for me is: Carcass! Best death metal band for me is: Immolation!."

Thanks for the answers Harold. I wish you all the best with Inhume and Mangled and play the great brutal music in both bands as long as possible!

"Thanks for this interview and keep supporting the underground!!! For info and news, check out our websites: www.inhume.nl , www.mangled.nl
