  • Utuk Xul - "The Goat Of the Black Possession"

    2003 / cd
    From Beyond Productions/Displeased Records
    Colombia
Utuk Xul - The Goat Of the Black Possession Utuk Xul translated means "evil spirit" - as far as subtlety is concerned this Colombian outfit is not the place to look. According to the press sheet "The Goat Of the Black Possession" should appeal to fans of Necrovore and Bloodstorm. I might point out similarities to Setherial and Dark Funeral for people only moderately interested in this sort of black metal. After the obligate keyboard intro 'Snake Of the Abyss' introduces a rather typical production: thin guitars, inaudible bass lines and 'tin can' drums. Giving credit where credit is due, Utuk Xul is competent on a mere musical/technical level and delivers their tracks with outstanding tightness. Quite an epic undertaking, as the track lasts almost a full 12 minutes. Vocalist Infernus Vobiscum is capable behind the mic, rasping out a Legion (of Marduk notoriety) alike shriek, although a little variety in the vocal lines would be appreciated. Nevertheless, black metal adepts won't probably bother the monotonous rasping. The lyrics are heavily influenced by the darker side Sumerian mythology and while not always written greatly, the message comes across vividly. 'the Ancient God Of Light (p. II)' is a shorter track - clocking little above 6 minutes - that has some interesting dynamics through out. 'Allax Xul' sees the band going into full (early) Dark Funeral and Enthroned worship. Why the band decided to put this instrumental track near the end of the album is beyond me, as it is easily the strongest one present. 'Whispers Of Typhared' continues in the same vein and sees a more distilled incarnation of Utuk Xul's otherwise epic take on songwriting. Well, if you can deal with the ridiculous evil imagery in both pictures and the liner notes in the credits, pick up this record.
