Discern - "Revive and rebuke"
1998 / 1cd
USA
I was expecting a classic death metal in the typical American style, with anti-clerical lyrics. Whoops, I was a bit wrong. In any case, it's not a minus for Discern. First of all, I'm most surprised by the fact that in the U.S. arose a band that in its style merges the classic American playing with (attention!!!) something in the vein of the 3rd Grave album. I have to say, this surprised me. But that's not the end of surprises. Discern consists of only one person - Bill Fraser, who plays all instruments: guitars, drums, base, and vocals. Some kind of a multi-instrumentalist. He's doing not bad at all. And the last surprise. Lyrics taken straight from the Bible. Half of you will probably stop reading the rest of the review now. Your decision. I wasn't discouraged by the lyrics at all. It's a private decision of the artist what he's going to sing about. And here the vocals do not belong to the understandable ones... As I've mentioned earlier, Discern plays a good mix of the American and European styles. It's not my ultimate discovery but I like to listen to it from time to time (8 tunes in 21 minutes), and I plan to do an interview with Bill for the next issue. That's it.
