Scourged Flesh - Welcome To the End Of the World Death/thrash metal is a notoriously hard genre to get right. It requires the correct amount of swagger, technical skill and, above all, a serious dose of energy and adrenaline to nail those required pumping grooves and spine-splitting rhythm sections. Whether a band plays midpaced or rather fast is irrevelant, as long as the basics are done right. Scourged Flesh is a band from Perth, Australia that with “Welcome To the End Of the World” is on to its third offering. Where their preceding two records dealt exclusively with Christianity this record is loose concept album dealing with the consequences and horrors of war. The lyrics are among the better ones in the underground, but don’t reach the same level of iconic imagery of famous warmongers Bolt Thrower, Jungle Rot or Panzerchrist. The riffing, dynamics and chord progressions are that what you’d expect of a demo-level band, not an act onto its third record. The melodies and traditional metal leads/solos are more than adequate and fitting of a better unit altogether. The vocals are a mix of grunts and rasps but aren’t very remarkable in the grand scheme of things. Additional female vocals add little to a bland package. The vocal solo in ‘Extinct’ was a bad idea and should never have been put on the finished product. Both in terms of intensity, overall brutality and craftsmanship this is below par by any reasonable standards. The artwork, design and lay-out serve their function, but are hardly memorable. Neither does the chosen cover art seem to fit with the band’s lyrical concept of war. It’s hard to believe that this act hails from the sun-blasted outbacks of Australia, home to infamous and inhumanly brutal institutions such as Abominator, Bestial Warlust, Corpse Molestation, Denouncement Pyre, Deströyer 666, Gospel Of the Horns or progressive outfits such as Alchemist and Alarum.
