Legion - Made Of Evil and Flesh Just a few years ago Thornafire was Chile’s best kept death metal secret. These days a case could be made for the newly formed Legion, from capital city Santiago de Chile. Where Thornafire was heavily indebted to Immolation’s “Failures For Gods” Legion instead is more of the Incantation persuasion, combining its early era musically with its recent era vocally. Luisa Quintrala Silva’s grunt is reminiscent of Mike Saez, but with the pained inflection of reluctant frontman John McEntee. Musically “Made Of Evil and Flesh” is redolent of “Onward to Golgotha” in its thickness, with the murkiness of “Mortal Throne Of Nazarene”. The two songs of the demo/EP ‘Irae. Defeat My Enemies’ and ‘Luxuria. Made Of Evil and Flesh’ are hardly reinventing the wheel, but sound quite powerful despite their stripped down nature. None of the transitions are fluent exactly, and some of the arrangements sound like they could fall apart at any given moment, but on the whole (and considering the band was together less than a year at that point) there’s some mild promise to this demo/EP. Alex Acosta’s bass guitar thankfully features prominently in the mix, and there’s a healthy buzz to Aaron Duches’ guitar work. Ricardo Rodriguez’ drumming pretty much copies Kyle Severn’s patented simplicity, and he isn’t going to be mistaken for Juan Pablo Donoso anytime soon. Of the two tracks ‘Luxuria. Made Of Evil and Flesh’ is the most doom-oriented, and evil sounding. The narration towards the end is a nice touch, but hardly adds up to anything. In its defense ‘Irae. Defeat My Enemies’ has a surprisingly acceleration towards its conclusion with Silva delivering some particularly agonizing shrieks and tortured screams. South America continues to be the better continent when it comes to pure unadulterated aggression. With some trimming, and some finetuning Legion might just surprise the death metal world in a few years. Torture is eternal, under the Ibex Moon.
