Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus - "The Child Must Die"
2015 / CD

Proving that black metal can be done right when in capable hands American-by-way-of-Finland duo Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus get most things right on their debut "The Child Must Die". Admittedly it isn't a game-changer, but it is refreshingly professional all the same. The record has a fittingly crunchy production job that isn't too overly polished, or digital sounding but distributes instruments and vocals evenly. The symfo elements thankfully never dominate, nor do they end up on the cheery/cheesy spectrum that is often mistaken for majesty. "The Child Must Die" isn't a Mutant-like speedfest, and the record moves at a sort of marching uptempo-midpace. On the flipside of these strong points comes the rather one-dimensional riffing, and the lack of any noteworthy dynamics. If they were aiming for that sort of Blut Aus Nord "The Mystical Beast Of Rebellion" type hypnotism they succeeded with flying colors – if not, well, at least they put their heart into it. The wonderful artwork wouldn't feel out of place on one of those Svart Records occult rock/70s doom metal albums, and the duo opts for a natural look instead of corpse painted chicanery – always a plus. Let's hope that Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus continues to evolve because there's looming potential here.
