Vomitory

Wywiad przeprowadził - Michał Kowalski
They are brutal, they are loud, they are metal!!! Try to imagine old Swedish death metal school mixed with Napalm Death! Impossible? Listen to those four bastards (brutal as fuck!!!) and eat your own shit, because here comes Vomitory!!! Tobias, I'd like to buy you a beer, because you have recorded the great album! Again! So when will you visit Poland? What are your concert plans?
"Thank you! I'd love to have a Polish beer! Please make it a Lech! At the moment there are no plans for a European tour, but we will do three gigs in The Netherlands together with our friends MANGLED in March. We will also do a Scandinavian tour in April together with The Crown and Vader, and later on we will also do some summer festivals, including Wacken open-air. But check our website, www.vomitory.net, regularly for updated tour information."

Last time you've played in Poland with Cannibal Corpse (in April'00). How was it?
"It was really great. The audience in Poland are true metal heads and it's always a pleasure to play in front of such audience. Poland has a special meaning to us, since it was the first country outside Sweden we played in. We were a bit misfortunate on the tour with Cannibal corpse, 'cause Erik our bass player got pneumonia after the Scandinavian gigs. He had such pain so he had to cancel two shows (Poznan and Prague), but the rest of Vomitory chose to perform those shows anyway but a little shorter, 'cause we didn't want to disappoint anybody who had come to the shows."

I hope nothing have been stolen from you that time? Not like in '95 when the radio from your car suddenly 'disappeared'...
"Ha, no not this time. When we played in Poland in '95 there was some motherfucker who stole our car stereo during our gig in Slupsk. This caused us such a delay so we had to cancel the gig the following day, which sucked bigtime 'cause it was a really cool place. But we don't give a fuck about that anymore, but now we know who did it."

I saw your gig at No Mercy Fest 2000 in Vienna. It was incredible event for me! How about you?
"Unfortunately, I don't have so many good memories from that place. We arrived there way too late, so when we got there everybody was suffering from stress so much so the whole atmosphere got very aggressive. I think the whole thing was a bit bad arranged, and their stage crew was a bunch of really annoying people. There were also some problems with the local promoter as well, but I don't know exactly what it was. But I remember the crowd was really enthusiastic, and in the end that's the most important thing."

Who paid for your appearance in No Mercy: your previous label - Fadeless Rec., or the present one - Metal Blade?
"Metal Blade."

How much money spends Metal Blade to promote Vomitory? Are you satisfied with their job?
"I don't know how much money Metal Blade spends on promoting Vomitory, but if I knew I would keep that for myself. It's nobody else's business. We are very satisfied with Metal Blade so far. They put us on a the European tour with Cannibal Corpse and the No Mercy festivals before we even had an album out on their label. I think that pretty much shows their trust in their bands. They also have the best possible promotion so we have no complaints."

What do you think about other death metal bands dealing with this label: Vader, The Crown, God Dethroned, Immolation, Cannibal Corpse, and Six Feet Under? Do you know each other?
"Metal Blade have some of the best death metal bands the whole scene have to offer these days, like Vader, Cannibal Corpse and Bolt Thrower. The Crown and God Dethroned are also very good. We only know a few of the bands yet, as we haven't met so many yet. The guys of The Crown have become very good friends of ours. We did a couple of gigs together on the Scandinavian part of the Cannibal Corpse tour and we've met several times after that and we get along real well with those guys. Would be awesome to do a full tour with them sometime. Cannibal Corpse are also very nice guys and we got along real well with them as well on the tour."

Let's talk about "Revelation Nausea" - your third album. It is a magic number, if you know what I mean.
"Thank you again! Yes, it's our third album and our first on Metal Blade. I know this is cliché, but this really is our fastest and most brutal release to date. The production is awesome, thanks to Henrik Larsson, our producer, and Berno studio. It's the first album Erik, our bass player, sings on and his deep voice really added some more brutality to our sound. I think this is our most important release so far. It's our first on Metal Blade, it's the first album Erik sings on and we got so good response on our previous album "Redemption", so we felt we had to prove that it was no coincidence. We think this is the best Vomitory album so far, no doubt."

How could you compare "Revelation Nausea" to your previous albums? If you were just a fan, would you buy those CDs? Why?
"As I said, this one is a little faster and more brutal than our previous releases. I also think the songs are better written on this album, as well as the lyrics. The vocal arrangements are also much better. The production is also the best so far - it is really powerful and brutal but it still has clarity as well, which give you that straight-in-your-face' impression. We are also better musicians for every album and I think you can hear that. If I was a fan I would buy those albums simply because it's good death metal in the old school way that I like it."

Your music doesn't nauseate at all. On the contrary, it's very active, hitting right into your face! Then why have you called the new CD - "Revelation Nausea"?
"We chose the title "Revelation Nausea" simply because we thought it sounded cool as an album title, and there were also good possibilities to make a good cover artwork for that title as well."

I have got the promo copy, without lyrics. So tell me is song "The Corpsegrinder Experience" about the vocalist of Cannibal Corpse? ha, ha
"No, not directly. It's about somebody who runs berserk when he meets an army of zombies. But you can say that George Fisher kind of inspired us to the title, and the song is a kind of a tribute to him and Cannibal Corpse."

Do you have a gun? What is song "9mm Salvation" about?
"The only gun I have is my 12'sperm-gun. "9 mm Salvation" is about somebody who commits suicide with a 9 mm."

When I look at the title "When Silence Conquers" it makes me laugh, because it contrasts very much to your music, which is heavy and loud!
"When silence conquers" is about our usual topic - war. The music on this song is a bit different than the rest of the songs on the album, not only because of the marching drums, but because it's a bit slower and heavier. Even though, I think this one is a typical Vomitory song. It could as well be written in 1993."

"Raped In Their Own Blood", "Redemption", "Revelation Nausea" - all your CD titles start with the letter 'R'. What does it mean?
"It's a satanic message. No, it's just coincidence. Until "Redemption" it was nothing we took notice of, but when we decided to take the title "Revelation Nausea" for our third album, it struck our minds. So our next album will probably be called "Reek of putrefaction", "Realm of chaos", "Rapture", "Reign in blood" or "Ride the lightning."

In my opinion the cover of "Raped In Their Own Blood" was...beautiful, ha, ha. Why didn't you use more bloody pictures covering your next releases?
"I don't know. It has just turned out this way. I don't think Peter Wallgren, the artist who did the other covers, is into blood and guts so much. At least at not when it comes to his art. Well, the cover for "Raped in their own blood" could have turned out much better I think, but thinking of how the conditions were back then, I think it's OK."

Your band's name is fantastic too. Do you often have an opportunity to vomit? ha, ha.
"Yes, we try to vomit as often as we can. At least twice a day."

Vomitory, Deranged, Defleshed - my "Unholy Swedish Metal Trinity"! I think I'm your slave, because I can't live without your music. Am I crazy, or what? ha, ha.
"Ha ha, no I think you're perfectly well! I think you got three good Swedish representatives there: Defleshed with their speed, aggression and thrash kind of death metal, Deranged with their brutal zombie death metal and Vomitory with the more traditional old school death metal sound."

OK, let's finish now, before I say something stupid (like:"I love you, because your music fucking rules!"). Say 'hello' to other 'vomitorians' in Poland and...cheerz!
"Thanks!!! Keep checking our website, www.vomitory.net, or the Metal Blade website, www.metalblade.de, for updated tour information. We look forward to come to Poland again, but as I mentioned earlier, there's nothing planned at the moment. Keep supporting metal and Na Zdrowie!!!"

...co do saksofonu to był to przypadek całkowity. Bo idąc coś zjeść do miasta napotkaliśmy kolesia który na ulicy grał na saksofonie. Zagadałem do niego żeby nagrał nam jakieś partie i zgodził się.
